Assignments

Below are excerpts from some of our early assignments in the semester. We used the assignments as a way to learn how to see with the camera, explore ideas, improve visual literacy and  learn the technical aspects of digital photography. [Hover over image to pause the slideshows.]

The students in our group come from all 5 boroughs of New York City with different perspectives, visions, and cultural backgrounds. Our very first assignment  focused on exploring the way the students saw their community and what they found important and interesting.

Portraiture has always been an important part of photography.  We explored the notion of looking at our subjects whether that be ourselves, someone we know, or someone we don’t know. Our second assignment explored self portraiture asking students to address three questions: How do I see myself? How do others see men? and How do I want to be seen? Then we moved on to photographing others by photographing someone they knew and someone they didn’t.
