#HereIsMyAmerica

What do people fail to understand about the lives of black Americans? Or the lives of anyone of color?

#HereIsMyAmerica – The New York Times

Future Imagemakers Lead Teacher Bayete Ross Smith is now embedded as an artist at The New York Times with Race/Related, a collaboration with the independent documentary showcase POV.

The portraits above show me in a variety of different clothing, all of it my own. On any given day, you might encounter me in one form or another.

It’s all part of a larger series I created, which also involved people of different backgrounds and genders. In every case, the facial expressions and lighting stay the same; all that changes is the subject’s clothing.

So the question is: What personal preconceptions do you, or any viewer, project onto me? Or others?…

#HereIsMyAmerica — a project we’re launching here and on Instagram — is an attempt to counter that simplistic approach.

Future Imagemakers and Future Film Scholars Book Collaboration

photocrati gallery
Throughout the semester the Saturday Future Imagemakers have been working on a collaboration with the Future Film Scholars. The goal of the collaboration was to create a book of the Future Imagemakers photographs and writing about the photographs that the Future Film Scholars wrote. We just recently got the writing back from the Film Scholars and were thrilled with the results. In the next few weeks we will put the book together.. Above you can find the pages of the book. The Future Imagemakers were really excited about the way the Film scholars interpreted their work!

Future Imagemakers on the NY Times Lens Blog

Ten of the 2013 Future Imagemakers submitted images to the New York Times Lens Blog Hometown project. Click HERE to see a slideshow of the work.

“My Hometown”  [is] a vibrant document of 4,289 images submitted by teenagers in school- or community-based photography programs across the United States, including rural villages and urban neighborhoods, wealthy suburbs and blue-collar Rust Belt towns.

While participants only photographed their own communities, together, the images create an important and lasting document of America today as seen by teenagers. They are published today in an interactive feature that opens with a selection of 145 photographs and is also searchable by state and by photographer. Many of the images will be archived at the Library of Congress in the Prints and Photographs Division. [Read more and see more of the 4,289 images submitted by teens throughout the country.]

It’s so exciting to see their work in the NY Times.
